Popular since the 15th Century, Valentine's Day has evolved into an occasion in which lovers or secret admirers express their love, crush or just 'like'....for another, by presenting flowers, handwritten poems, chocolate or cards.
St Valentine was a priest near Rome in about the year 270AD.
At that time the Christians were greatly prosecuted...and it was St Valentine (and his ministry) that helped Christian soldiers get married because the Roman Army forbade it.
He also cut "hearts" from parchment to remind them of God's Love. A possible origin of the widespread use of hearts on St Valentine's Day.
